San Diego Student From Torrey Pines High School Killed in Fatal DUI Crash in Rancho Santa Fe

In Rancho Santa Fe, five teenagers who had just left a party were in a fatal DUI crash that killed a senior from Torrey Pines High School.

According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner, the suspected drunk driver lost control of his 2008 Mazda 3 after speeding around a windy curve in the 5000 block of La Granada, near The Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club around 1:45 a.m. on Sunday. The driver was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Alexander Michael Capozza, a 17 year-old from San Diego’s Carmel Valley who was a well liked student at Torrey Pines High School died at the scene of the drunken driving accident. He was a passenger in the rear seat of the vehicle and was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the DUI crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Another male passenger, 17 from San Diego, who was taken to the hospital with head injuries, was not wearing a seatbelt. One boy from Carlsbad and another boy from Del Mar, both 17, sustained minor injuries. The driver of the fatal crash who is also 17 and from San Diego remains in Juvenile Hall. He was arrested on gross vehicular manslaughter and charges for driving under the influence.

Driving Under the Influence in San Diego County

In California, it is unlawful for any person under the influence of alcohol or drugs to drive.

If you have a 0.08 percent or more, be weight, of alcohol in your blood, you will be charges with driving under the influence or DUI if apprehended. You may face jail if you are convicted.
