San Diego DUI Hearing for Woman Accused of Fatal DUI
Suspected San Diego DUI driver Melanie Rebecca Flores faces murder charges for causing a head on collision while driving while intoxicated.
Flores, 47, is facing up to 15 years to life in state prison if convicted. The defendant allegedly caused a head on crash in April 2010 near Coronado on the Silver Strand which killed 95-year-old Stevens Benjamin Friedman when she was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.
A preliminary hearing was scheduled Tuesday for Flores. After the preliminary hearing, a judge will decide whether or not the prosecution has enough evidence to try the case. According to Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright, Flores has three previous DUIs from Illinois and is being held with bail set at 4 million dollars, since she was last arrested in June.
Bright said that Flores’s blood-alcohol level was measured at .32 percent which is four times the legal limit. Flores’s blood-alcohol level was measured forty-five minutes after the deadly crash. According to Coronado police, the defendant drove her car into two other vehicles. Friedman was in the front-seat passenger side of one of the other cars. The others who were victims of the San Diego fatal DUI crash were injured but survived.
